Dentures are made to replace your natural teeth, and so they should be cared for just as such, which means visiting the dentist regularly. Regardless of how many teeth you have, a visit to the dentist at least once a year is important to check you have no oral health concerns. During this visit, your dentist will also evaluate your risk of developing any oral problems or abnormalities. These visits are critical as oral health issues such as cavities, periodontal disease and oral cancer tend to cause no pain until the symptoms become serious.
Over time, it is inevitable that your dentures won’t fit as well as they once did. Changes in your mouth and bone can affect how your denture fits, and your dentist can make adjustments at each appointment if needed. Depending on how comfortable they are, your dentist can also evaluate whether a new set would be worthwhile, and help you to start the process.
No matter how many or how few teeth you have, you still need to maintain good oral hygiene habits. Be sure to to brush twice a day, clean all surfaces of lone standing teeth, and floss at least once daily. Ideally, you should rinse your mouth and partial denture with water after each meal to help dislodge any food particles and prevent decay on the remaining teeth. Even with a full set of dentures, your daily routine should be just thorough, consisting of brushing your gums, tongue and roof of your mouth with a soft brush twice daily.
