Avoid costly injuries to your teeth, supporting bone and soft tissue during contact sports by wearing a custom-made mouthguard. Custom-made mouthguards not only fit well, they’re comfortable and do not restrict speech or breathing. The precise fit of a custom-made mouthguard creates great suction so it can’t be dislodged easily.
Custom made mouthguards are available in a wide variety of colours as well as identification marking.
Growing children will need to have their mouthguard replaced often to maintain the best protection. It is a good idea to bring your mouthguard with you to your dental appointment so your dentist can check the fit and make adjustment if required.
The first step to getting a custom-made mouthguard is an appointment to have an impression taken of both your upper and lower teeth. The mouthguard is vacuumed formed over the upper mould so it fits the contours of your teeth. The lower mould is used to articulate the mouthguard enabling your lower teeth to sit comfortably in position against the mouthguard when you are wearing it. Articulating the mouthguard ensures you have even distribution of forces between your upper and lower teeth to reduce the risk of supporting bone injuries.
Caring for your mouthguard:
- Clean your mouthguard after use with a soft toothbrush and soap
- Do not use hot water for cleaning as this could change the shape of your mouthguard
- After cleaning, let your mouthguard dry thoroughly so it doesn’t become an active breeding ground for bacteria
- Use the mouthguard box provided for storing your mouthguard
- Do not store your mouth guard box in direct sunlight
