There is a large number of toothpaste brands on the market, each offering several different types of toothpaste. It can get difficult to know what toothpaste to use. We often get asked what type of toothpaste is best, or which one we recommend. While we don’t recommend specific brands, we do recommend that you choose a toothpaste that meets certain criteria.
We recommend you look for the following qualities in a toothpaste:
- Contains fluoride – fluoride helps to keep teeth strong and reduces your decay risk
- Age appropriate – children under six years old should not use adult toothpaste
When using toothpaste you only need a pea sized amount. It is best to spit out the excess and avoid rinsing with water for 30 minutes, so you can get the full benefit of the fluoride in your toothpaste.
Some points to remember when choosing a toothpaste:
- Whitening toothpastes are very abrasive – they will remove some staining, but results are usually minor and long term use should be avoided.
- Sensitive toothpastes are very effective at reducing sensitivity. Different brands work in different ways.
